Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.
The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:
- Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
- New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
- The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
- Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
- Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
- Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
- The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
- More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
- Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
- Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
- Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.
Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.
Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 23:56, 14 জানুৱাৰী 2012 (UTC)

Creating an outreach video We [Edit] Wikipedia
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Deal all,
As a part of helping the community to reach out to more people apart from the presentations, handouts, FAQs and mailing list support we also have need for more visuals. Audio/Video clips containing Indian Wikipedians sharing their message "I EDIT WIKIPEDIA" or "I EDIT WIKIPEDIA IN MY INDIAN LANGUAGE" to create some more impact to inspire people to contribute to Wikipedia. Community folks conducting outreach events could use such a video while presenting.
We are requesting you to shoot the video saying:
- "I [Edit] Wikipedia" in Assamese language.
And then answer any of the following few questions;
- "Why do you edit in Assamese language?"
- "What do you gain from editing Wikipedia?"
- How has Wikipedia changed your life?/
- How does Wikipedia help readers?
OR
- What imact does Wikipedia have on readers?
- What do you gain by being part of the community?
- How do you invite to join the community?
We will love if you answer some fun questions like;
- If wikipedia was an animal, what would it be?
- What would happen to you if you lost you internet connection for 1 month and could not edit Wikipedia?
This will be a motivational video to reach out to more Indian editors and make them aware about editing Wikipedia of their languages. All the Indic language communities are invited to take part in this event. We request all the language communities to shoot the video of some of the active editors of their respective communities and send them back to us. The few criteria you need to keep in mind before shooting would be:
- Put this message on your next meetup agenda. Shoot the video in the meet up itself so that you would be having more people. We would love to more no of videos from you.
- It could be one single person saying "I [edit] wikipedia" or a group of Wikipedians saying "We [edit] wikipedia" in their own languages.
- For editing purposes, it is better if you record video in room with LESS noise and MORE light.
- It is better to keep the camera still, preferably on a tripod or an elevated place to avoid shaking of the video.
- Try and keep video in .MPEG, .AVI or .MP4, so that while editing we don't have to convert and lose quality.
- You can use any normal digital camera, even your (iPhone) camera or preferably a good quality handycam/video camera.
After shooting the video please let us know and we will help you to send it to us. Please feel fee write in my talk page or drop me a mail at subhawikimedia.org mail to ask any question . --Subha WMF 10:59, 22 ফেব্ৰুৱাৰী 2012 (UTC)
Updates and Ideas for and from the India communities (May 2012)
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Greetings! Here is another series of updates from across Indic language communities which might be useful for the Assamese community!
- The first Indian language Wikipedia conference: WikiSangamolsavam was successfully conducted by Malayalam Wikipedians in Kollam, Kerala.
- The Film project in Hindi Wikipedia has been active since December, 2011 with 4 editors and over 1000 film articles. It's also an open invitation for more members to hop in and expand the project scope.
- Gujarati Wikipedians have started working on their third book on Wikisource called Bhadrambhadra. They are also planning to conduct a Wiki summer camp for students in Gujarat.
- The Assamese community is doing great on a bunch of projects including the CD project, medicine project and the ongoing photo contest organized by volunteers. The community is also planning an event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Assamese Wikipedia on June 10th, 2012.
- The translation project in Kannada Wikipedia is 12 members strong.
- The Odia community members have implemented the social media pilot to attract newbies and engage them in editing via Facebook. This plan requires mentors from the existing community to guide new users to edit Wikipedia
- Here's is a list of all the Outreach documents translated in Indic languages by respective community members. This is work in progress and all community members are welcome to help translate more documents!
- Here's a blog post by Barry Newstead, the Chief Global Development Officer, WMF on his wonderful experience at the WikiSangamolsavam in Kerala.
- Please reach out to Shiju or I for any support you need. (Our email IDs are shiju@wikimedia.org and noopur@wikimedia.org respectively.)
Please share your comments and ideas below on any of these updates. Noopur28 (talk) 08:47, 10 মে' 2012 (UTC)
Updates from India Program Team
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]This is the first post from the India Program team regarding the team. I have been posting updates on the various mailing lists - but am acutely aware that the majority of our community is on village pumps or project pages and hence this post. Do excuse me for posting something which is not solely focused on this project, but the work we are doing has learnings that you might find useful for your project.
- There is an India Program page on meta - which has links to a number of important workstreams (on the right of the page)
- Here is your India Program team. Feel free to reach out for any help or to provide any suggestion - or just to say hello!
- I submitted the following mid-year report to the community on January 15th 2011 - outlining the activities for 2011 and the priorities for 2012. Strictly speaking, this wasn't a mid-year report because it covered all of 2011, but going forward, I intend to make it a half-yearly affair. Please add your comments or suggestions here, or below this post.
- I have recently started monthly updates. The monthly update for February is available here. Please add your comments or suggestion here. The areas of emphasis for March are here. Please add your comments or here. This is really useful for us to ensure that we are doing what you need most.
- I have also started a new tab on the India Program page for Learnings, called Gyan. I think it is going to be a pretty cool place for us to put together a whole host of learnings, lessons, heartbreaks, Eureka moments and inspirations - gathered from all over the community. Stay tuned for more!
- One of the essential things that India Program needs to constantly work out is keeping our community informed of the work that we are doing - so that this work is clearer but also to help cross-pollinate ideas amongst a wider set of community members who might not have been engaged on specific village pump / talk page discussion or involved in particular activities (e.g. outreach events) or wikiprojects. I propose to have a fortnightly IRC for the community with India Program. (For those who are not familiar with IRC, it is an Internet messaging system similar to a regular chat room. It's very simple to use and you can join in by clicking on the following link. This would be done on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST (which is GMT + 0530) - THOUGH NOT THIS MONTH - BECAUSE I HAVE MISSED THE TIMELINE. Just for March, we will do it on March 15th and March 29th (both at 9pm IST which is GMT + 0530). I suggest that these chats are focused on specific work streams. As with many community meet-ups - folks will give time to attend a meet-up or participate in an IRC only if there is a topic of relevance to them. Therefore, we will do one IRC on Indic languages and one on Outreach & Communications. The March 15th one will be focused on Indic Languages and the one on March 29th will be on Outreach & Communications. (All IRCs will start with a re-cap of India Programs activities.) There is quite a bit of overlap on these topics - so feel free to join both. Please do also invite anyone who is interested to know more about India Program or - even more importantly - interact with fellow Wikimedians. As always, the logs will be put up on meta for the benefit of those who can't attend and for the record.
Please feel free to translate this post for the benefit of the larger audience. In fact, I'd be really grateful if you did.

Wikipatrika: Next Issue
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Dear all, I just sent an email to the Assamese mailing list regarding Wikipatrika. It's a fantastic way of celebrating the wonderful work of your community. I'm trying to help bring out the next issue in April 2012. Can i request you to create a page on the Assamese wikipedia and start adding content, and share this page with everyone else. You can create your stories in Assamese or in English. (Someone can then help translate it before it can move to wikimedia.in) Please do refer to my email for further details and please reach out to me if you need any help. Updates and Ideas for and from Indic communities
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Greetings all! I thought it would be useful to share the following updates from various Indic communities - which you might find interesting for the Assamese community.
- Odia community had a great weekend between March 30 and April 2 - including 3 outreach sessions and 1 community meetup. They shared a great report that includes lessons, solutions and next steps on outreach & community collaboration - which are applicable across many communities.
- Wikisource is seeing increased participation across communities and there is's a story that was shared about Gujarati community's Wikisource as well as an update from Shiju on a tool (DjVu) that will be useful to all Wiki librarians. If you are not familiar with Wikisource and want to know a little bit more, Amir Aharoni has written a basic introduction about it.
- Malayalam community is organizing the first Indic wiki conference ever - Sangamothsavam - on April 28-29 in Kollam, Kerala. They have very sweetly invited other Indic Wikimedians to attend, and we know that a couple of communities are going to be sending delegate - because they can take back ideas to their own communities.
- A couple of interesting Wikiprojects are active across different Indic communities. The medical project is up and running in Assamese, Bangla, Odia, Malayalam and Telugu. The Kannada community is working on a translation enhancement project
- India Program worked to several Indic communities on outreach, ideas for helping newbies, Wikiprojects as well as other technical support - and have prepared the following report for March. In April, the plan is to continue this support including Hindi editing at the Crafts Museum GLAM project as well as planning the 10th anniversaries of Nepali and Assamese.
- There are regular IRC meetings to discuss Indic languages, outreach and communication support that India Program provides. These are all logged here - and there are a couple of useful ones on how to establish and build Indic Wikisources as well as outreach, especially for Indic languages. (IRCs are conducted one 1st & 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST at #wikimedia-office. Please do join in; you'll find them very useful.)
Please reach out to Shiju or I for any support you need. (Our email IDs are shiju@wikimedia.org and noopur@wikimedia.org respectively.)

Updates on Social Media pilot
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Greetings! Here is a small update on the Social Media pilot supported by India Program. This pilot is running on two Facebook groups for Wikipedia activities: one in English (One is You can also write on Wikipedia) and one in Odia (Odia Wikipedia). Both of these are being piloted to see if we can explain the very basics of editing to new editors and to encourage them to make their first basic edits. This is done You can visit these groups to see the regular editing sessions that we are conducting there. So far, we have been able to get 30 first time editors in English and 10 in Odia - all of whom have completed a few basic tasks (like creating usernames, corrected mistakes, adding references, inter-wiki links!)
Facebook is a useful way of engaging with young users because they are more comfortable there. Here is a 19 point comprehensive guide that we've developed to illustrate the kind of language, nature of messages and way of interacting on Fb that you might find useful and can implement on your groups as well. Please note the mini-editing sessions we have devised with just 5 tasks to make the start of a new editor's Wiki journey really simple! If you need any help to try this pilot in your group please write to me (noopur@wikimedia.org). (Even if your community does not yet have a facebook page, or if the page is inactive right now, I can support you.) Happy to help! Noopur28 (talk) 08:57, 29 মে' 2012 (UTC)

Lessons on community building
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Dear all, Assamese Wikipedia has seen phenomenal growth in the past one year. It currently has 31 active editors and 6 Wikiprojects (from 10 editors and no project in November 2011.) Their average monthly edits increased from 3000 in April 2011 to 5000 in November 2011. Congratulations, Assamese Community! India Program worked closely the Assamese community - and this work was part of Shiju's pilot focused on basic community building. There are several lessons for how small (and larger) communities can be built. It is worth reflecting on what inspired this progress, and to share these with all other communities.
Lessons
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Strong communication: Like Shiju developed strong personal bonds with Assamese Wikipedians to guide them in their efforts, any community needs open communication, exchange of ideas and brainstorming to keep its projects going.
Initial push: Some of us are experienced editors and some might need help getting started. Shiju helped conduct the first two outreach sessions in Assam and this gave the community confidence to do more.
Encouraging collaboration: The basic idea of any Wikiproject is working together. A single editor can write many articles but a group of editors can manage a Wikiproject of hundreds of articles!
Building capacity and confidence: What started with basic support, translations and outreach advice by Shiju resulted in a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration where all editors themselves confidently put forth ideas to promote Assamese Wikipedia.
Healthy environment: Any organization, club or even a group of friends needs cooperation and productive inputs to progress. Like the Assamese Wikipedia family, young and old people from different walks of life who contribute selflessly to Wikipedia need that motivation to continue. Let's always strive to make it a pleasant experience.
While this update focuses on how the Assamese community has successfully woven together a bunch of great friendships, collaborations and figured a great way of working toegether, these learnings could help every community think about what they could also do, or do more of!. If you want to discuss measures to build or improve your community or need our help to start a Wikiproject, you can write to Shiju (salex@wikimedia.org) or if you are interested in conducting outreach sessions, do reach out to Nitika (nitika@wikimedia.org) Noopur28 (talk) 11:31, 20 জুন 2012 (UTC)
Presenting Chatasabha
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Hi All,
This message is in English, sincere apologies for that.
New editors across Indic Wikipedias often face problems while editing for which need they help. However, most don't know where they can ask questions or get clarifications as they are usually unfamiliar with village pumps or mailing lists or even talk pages on basic editing. Many existing editors want to help new editors and could appreciate a central place where they can meet and help new editors. India Program has started a pilot to support the Odia community's help desk, Chatasabha. (Incidentally, "Chata" means student and "Sabha" means community, in Odia.) This pilot will build on the community's existing efforts - and seeks to provide a structured way of designing and running a Help Desk. It takes learnings from English Wikipedia's Tea House as well as other experiences on Help Desk and similar services.
The Help Desk that is being piloted is user friendly, has guidelines to provide simple answers to new editors and tries to manage the work load of existing community members by providing ready answers to frequently asked questions. The user friendliness of the Help Desk is in the form of being able to ask questions without getting stuck on Wiki markups as well as illustrated answers to some questions.
I have put a page on meta which has the pilot design. Eventually, we would like to help other Indic languages build similar Help Desks. Please do provide your feedback on the talk page.

GLAM Crafts Museum blog post
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Dear all, Here's a blog post cum report on India's first GLAM initiative at the National Crafts Museum! The program started out in English but was taken forward in Hindi to suit the staff members who have been enthusiastically creating articles and editing in Hindi Wikipedia! The program has been a bold step to prove that GLAM can very well happen in India - with its own design and structure and it has also given the Hindi community a precious gift of 6 new editors.
A special thanks to User: Roboture who has been with us in each and every meet and helped train editors, User:Yann for his first set of invaluable Commons contributions and to User:Aniruddhajnu and User:Siddhartha Ghai for coming down to the museum to inspire the staff members.
Hope this gives more courage to any community that wants to start a similar project! Would love to provide any help needed. Noopur28 (talk) 06:32, 25 জুলাই 2012 (UTC)
Update on IPv6
[সম্পাদনা কৰক](Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)
The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.
What this means for your project:
- At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334
". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
- In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
- We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.
Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

[সম্পাদনা কৰক](Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)
As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.
The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:
- language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
- infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
- lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)
It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.
For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed
[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Please translate for your local community
Hello All,
The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.
The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)
By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!
Thanks!
Pats Pena
