Fallback Language

Currently the fallback language for the Assamese Wikipedia interface is Bengali. So the interface messages that have not been translated into Assamese yet appear in Bengali if that translation exists in that language; else it appears in the default language which is English. It seems to me that users of the Assamese Wikipedia (general readers, editors, admins etc) are more likely to be conversant in English than in Bengali. Moreover, for those who are helping out with the translation in translatewiki.net, it is easier to locate an untranslated message if it were in English.

Please vote your preference below. Vote Yes if you would prefer English as the fallback language and No if you prefer Bengali as the fallback language. The voting will close September 27, 2011.

Assamese Vs Latin numerals in templates using parser functions

We need to establish a consensus to use Latin (English) numerals instead of Arabic-Indic (Assamese) numerals in mathematical computations in Assamese wikipedia. The reason is, when Assamese numerals are used in certain parser functions like #expr, it throws an "Expression Error" because they are defined using Latin numerals. Not only that, when one uses magic words like {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTMONTH}} etc. in calculations, the same problem occurs. A lot of templates use these. It is also very difficult to modify the definitions of magic words. Although we can modify results returned my magic words into English using "formatnum", Its not practical to change all thousands of templates using them. Please note that the numerals in other cases (like lists) will stay Assamese only, even if we implement this proposed solution.

The following demonstrates the problem:

• Probable solutions:

1. {{#expr: {{formatnum: {{CURRENTYEAR}}|R}} + 10}}: 2034
2. Set "$wgTranslateNumerals = false;" in LocalSettings.php

The first solution is not acceptable since there are a lot of templates where functions like {{CURRENTYEAR}}, {{CURRENTDAY}} etc are used. So, we need to modify LocalSettings.php as shown above.

See templates like "Infobox Indian Jurisdiction", "Infobox Settlement" etc. You can also see how modification using "formatnum" works in the template "For year month day".

Comments

Instead of going for voting (for these sort of issues), please discuss the matter. This issue can be solved easily if Assamese wiki community users with knowledge in Template and other stuff involved in a discussion. My point here is, going for community vote for each and every aspect is not good for Assamese wiki. For most of the things consensus can be reached through discussion. I suggest to start Village pump in Assamese wiki very soon.

Regarding this topic, as mentioned else where, please DO NOT translate the complex wiki code to any language. Just keep the code as it is in English wiki, translate only rest the contents. --Shijualex ০৮:১৬, ২৯ চেপ্তেম্বৰ ২০১১ (UTC)

I agree with ShjuAlex. For now, we should concentrate on translating the contents in Assamese and keep the complex wiki codes untouched.
