পঞ্জাবী শব্দটো (কেতিয়াবা পাঞ্জাবী বুলিও বানান কৰা হয়) পাৰ্চী ভাষাৰ পাঞ্জ-আব শব্দৰ পৰা উদ্ভৱ হৈছে, যাৰ অৰ্থ 'পাঁচ প্ৰকাৰৰ পানী', যিয়ে সিন্ধু নদীৰ পাঁচটা প্ৰধান পূব উপনৈক বুজায়। এই অঞ্চলৰ নামটো দক্ষিণ এছিয়াৰ তুৰ্কী-পাৰ্চী বিজয়ীসকলে প্ৰৱৰ্তন কৰিছিল আৰু ই সংস্কৃত নাম পঞ্চনাদৰ অনুবাদ আছিল, যাৰ অৰ্থ হৈছে 'পাঁচখন নদীৰ দেশ'।.^[13]^[14]
