Proposal to enable an experimental open source machine translation system for Assamese[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Content translation has been used already by many communities to translate more than half a million Wikipedia articles, and we want to help communities with potential to grow by using translation more. We propose to enable in Content Translation experimental support for a basic machine translation system for Assamese that could improve over time with the help of the community. Background[সম্পাদনা কৰক]For some languages, Content translation offers Machine Translation as a starting point for users to edit and improve. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. As a result, the translations produced with the tool are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch. Unfortunately, Assamese is not supported by the translation services integrated in the tool such as Apertium, Google or Yandex. This requires editors to write their translations from scratch. Proposal[সম্পাদনা কৰক]We want to propose the integration of OpusMT, an Open source Neural Machine Translation system that supports the English-Assamese language pair (you can try the translation engine in this example website). Although the translation service is based on MarianMT, a powerful neural network system, the quality of the final translations heavily depends on the availability of translation data which is limited for Assamese at the moment. This means that:
We believe that this approach will help the less-supported languages over time. We want to check if this plan sounds good with the Assamese community, and encourage Assamese editors to translate Wikipedia articles with the tool. In this way, your translations not only help expand the knowledge available in your language, but also become a way to improve the open source machine translation service that can be used inside and outside Wikipedia. Note that the usage of OpusMT machine translation is optional and editors are free to translate without using such services. In order to facilitate access to the tool we also plan to enable Content translation by default on Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences. Impact[সম্পাদনা কৰক]On Assamese Wikipedia, 198 articles have been created with Content Translation since 2015 (compared to the 6.7 thousand articles created from scratch in the same period). So we don’t expect a high volume of new content as an immediate result of this experiment. In any case, we want to encourage editors to report any issues they find with the tool while creating or reviewing translations. In order to make sure that the content created using the new machine translation system results in a productive contribution, we’ll keep track of the translations created with the tool and their deletion ratios. In addition, we’ll set stricter limits on machine translation to enforce more intensive editing of the initial low quality machine translation. We want to make sure the expectations are clear before enabling the new system. Please share your questions and your thoughts on the idea. Considering that I developed a semi-automated bot called TextCleanerBot to correct some usual mistakes such as replacing Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, punctuation related mistakes, and some other Assamese grammatical errors. I am thankful to Mridul Kumar Sharmah for letting me use his database for Lachit pad, an online sanitizer for Assamese texts. Earlier there used to be a bot called Ucodebot, which used to replace Bengali ৰ with Assamese ৰ, but unfortunately, that is not active anymore. The idea behind having a locally run bot is that we as a community can keep updating the database as needed. I have already done some test runs and results are mostly positive with some fluke here and there. I will constantly be improving them as we go. Improving the translation support for the Assamese Wikipedia[সম্পাদনা কৰক]Hi! Content translation has been successful in supporting the translation process on many Wikipedia communities, and we want to help additional wikis with potential to grow using translation as part of a new initiative. Content translation facilitates the creation of Wikipedia articles by translating content from other languages. It has been used already to create more than half a million articles. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. In general, our analysis shows that the translations produced are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch. Assamese Wikipedia editors have used Content translation to create more than three hundred articles. Given the size of the editing community, we think that there is potential to use translation to create more articles, expand existing ones, and attract new editors that learn how to make productive edits. Translation can help the community to reduce the language gap with other languages and grow the number of editors in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this goal, we want to collaborate with you to make Content translation more visible in the Assamese Wikipedia and support new ways to translate. As a first step, during the next weeks we plan to enable Content translation by default on the Assamese Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting[সম্পাদনা কৰক]The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes[1] between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor. These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful. Looking ahead The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias. The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis. The WMF Language team has added another machine translation (MT) support for the Content Translation in Assamese Wikipedia called FLORES. This means that you can choose to use FLORES machine translation when translating Wikipedia articles to Assamese using the Content Translation. The FLORES Machine Translation service is provided by an AI research team at Meta through a free for use API key that allows the Content Translation to access the service on the FLORES server for an evaluation trial period. This MT is set as optional; in your Wikipedia, which means you can choose not to use it as your preferred initial translator. If you decide to use this service, you can select "FLORES" from the "Initial Translation" dropdown menu where you will find other existing machine translation services on the sidebar. The Wikimedia Foundation has worked out an agreement that allows the use of FLORES without compromising Wikipedia’s policies about attribution of rights, your privacy as a user, and brand representation. But I want to thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global behavior guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC. After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy. We are currently in the second phase of the consultation. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the enforcement and implementation of this policy. We want to hear from the community on how this policy can be enforced on the Assamese community and what might be needed to do so. You can participate in the discussion here. This follows the March 2022 vote, which resulted in a majority of voters supporting the Enforcement Guidelines. During the vote, participants helped highlight important community concerns. The Board’s Community Affairs Committee requested that these areas of concern be reviewed. The volunteer-led Revisions Committee worked hard reviewing community input and making changes. They updated areas of concern, such as training and affirmation requirements, privacy and transparency in the process, and readability and translatability of the document itself. The revised Enforcement Guidelines can be viewed here, and a comparison of changes can be found here. How to vote? Beginning January 17, 2023, voting will be open. This page on Meta-wiki outlines information on how to vote using SecurePoll. Who can vote? The eligibility requirements for this vote are the same as for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees elections. See the voter information page for more details about voter eligibility. If you are an eligible voter, you can use your Wikimedia account to access the voting server. What happens after the vote? Votes will be scrutinized by an independent group of volunteers, and the results will be published on Wikimedia-l, the Movement Strategy Forum, Diff and on Meta-wiki. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems. All traffic will switch on 1 March. The test will start at 14:00 UTC. Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future. You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.

Contributors can decide to switch to another translation service that is not default if they prefer the service, which will be helpful in analysing user preferences in the future. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. One of our main targets was to reduce the security issue and liability along with privacy issue. As such, this tool uses a single bot account to interact with mediawiki which eliminates the need of storing the user's access token on the server. As of now, the bot would perform the following tasks. In order to prevent spamming, all the edits on user talk pages would be done by batch hourly, rather than immediately.

Hello everyone, After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting. As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy. The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows: Individual vote: Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333). Affiliates vote: Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).
